Sandvik AB :: Essays Papers

Sandvik AB Sandvik AB began operations as a small steel company in Sandviken, Sweden. The company, originally known as Goransson Hogbo Stal & Jernwerks, recognized early on the important role creating innovative techniques and products played in being successful. To this day, Sandvik maintains a firm commitment to research as a means of gaining competitive advantage. Unfortunately, competing with other innovative industrial firms in a small country like Sweden provides limited growth opportunities. The local environment made Sandvik realize growth would only be achievable through foreign market development. So over the next century Sandvik would expand to become one of the largest materials technology engineering companies on the globe. Sandvik’s expansion was facilitated through a strategy of unrelated diversification predicated upon innovation. Technologies, such as cemented carbide fueled, product development and gave rise to new business areas. Such advances, coupled with a strong emphasis on internationalization, drove growth for a long time. However, growth slowed during the 1970s and into the 1980s. Much of the growth achieved during this period was a result of acquisitions. Prior to the 1984 reorganization, Sandvik’s organizational structure consisted of divisions where managers had to report to both divisional management and functional management at the parent company. For a company known for its innovations, this reporting relationship created enormous bureaucratic waste and costs, as well as delayed decision-making. However, in 1983 the company established a decentralized structure, creating six business areas, two service companies, and three regional companies. Coromant emerged as the highest return business in the portfolio. Amongst the other business areas it served as a model for best practices and process innovation. Despite the success of his major initiatives, the current CEO, Clas Ake Hedstrom, is still looking for ways to further integrate and produce synergies amongst Sandvik’s business areas. Integration has already occurred or is being studied in human resources, marketing, and information technology. However, disagreement exists amongst managers over the amount and level at which integration is needed. Employees are also concerned about a return to centralized decision-making and loss of autonomy over their business area. Finally, it is still unclear how the cost, fit and significance of further integration may impact business area needs. The uncertainty surrounding these issues makes the whole idea of integration to create synergies questionable.

Formal Letter in the Public services Essay

This is a formal letter used to send information out to external parties. This specific letter is used to engage students in an exciting opportunity and potential career option. Letters are used by all in the public services and this letter that I have has been given is used by someone in the armed forces as they need to tell the headteachers about an excellent challenge for their students. Letters like this are used to inform someone about a meeting that will be happing at a certain time and day and where it will be at. In the RAF this would be a normal form of communication that they would use to inform one another of important dates coming up, but in the normal day an e-mail would suffice. Firstly on this letter the name of the Sergeant sending it is highlighted in bold this is so it will get the reader’s attention straight away and the reader will want to continue to read it, it will also show who they need to respond to in order to get the day out for their students and then underneath it states that it is from the RAF so this is letting the person know where the letter has come from and who they are, and then underneath this there is other information about where the letter will be sent off to and who will be getting the letter, this information will let the person that is delivering it know where it has to go to as it has the street name and the post code. Secondly they have information about the person that it has been sent to they use lines to split it up so that they page looks better and the information will be easier to read, Tony splits it up because he does not want the reader to think that there will be lots of information to read through which often puts readers off reading it as they think it is going to be too much, and too much effort. This also would get the readers to view the letter as the reader will think it is important and will want to know the information that he has written in on the letter. Thirdly the information they have put in the other side of the split up box is about if the person would like to write back to them, so if they need more information or just want to ask them something about what they have written in the letter they can contact them on the provided details and use the reference so Tony knows immediately what they are talking about. This information is also given because they will need to reply to say that they would.

Homeostatic Balances Essay

Homeostasis is maintaining an Internal Balance. If we fail to maintain an internal balance every system inside of our body will be disrupted. Hypertension To explain to a 65 year old man with an 8th grade education, that he has hypertension, I would begin explaining, in a manor I believe that he would understand, what hypertension is and how it can affect him. ‘Hypertension is when your blood pressure is high on a daily basis. Blood pressure is considered to be high when the reading is 140/90 or higher. When your heart beats harder your blood pressure rises. High blood pressure can be caused by an imbalance in the Circulatory System and can lead to many other health problems including stroke and heart disease. Treatments that can lower blood pressure include lifestyle changes and medications. Lifestyle changes that can lower blood pressure are, but not limited to, diet changes, exercising and relaxation. There are a very wide variety of different medications that can be taken for hypertension.’ The homeostatic imbalance that causes hypertension is something that would raise blood pressure such as stress, being overweight, older age, ect. The organ system involved with hypertension is the heart. The feedback system cannot maintain homeostasis because the heart is working too hard to get the blood pressure to a normal range. The consequences for not maintaining homeostatic balance can be major health problems associated with the heart such as stroke and heart disease. Reference: Some of the information I found was in a YouTube video- Hypertension Explained Clearly! 1 of 2 @ http://youtu.be/OmKVteeuQj0 Diabetes To explain diabetes to a 13-year old middle school honors student who has just been diagnosed with it, I would begin with what diabetes is. ‘Juvenile-onset/Type 1 diabetes is a disease that is caused by your body not being able to produce or use insulin. For unknown reasons your body’s immune system, as well as others with type 1 diabetes, attacks various cells in the body which causes a deficiency of the insulin hormone. You will now need to monitor your food intake and check your blood sugar levels.’ The  homeostatic imbalance that causes type 1 diabetes is a metabolic disorder where the body does not produce enough or produces too much insulin. The organ system involved with diabetes is the pancreas, but the entire body can be affected by diabetes. The feedback system cannot maintain homeostasis because the body cannot create enough, or creates too much insulin. Even though the receptors are telling the control center that the effector needs to produce more i nsulin the body cannot create it or creates too much of it. Consequences of not maintaining homeostatic balance include problems with eyes, heart, kidneys, feet, nerves and even the reproductive system. Theory of Social Contract Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Theory of Social Contract - Essay Example Hobbes theory of Social Contract ratifies the condition in which individuals give up their individual liberties, in exchange for a common security. In this theory, no limits exist to the natural rights to liberty. Through the social contract, people are able to transfer their mutual rights. According to Hobbes, individuals sacrifice their liberty to the Leviathan because the society in which people are born into has laws and convection that are already in place (Baumgold, 53). Folks have no option but to adhere to the existing limited conventions and laws instead of exploiting their natural unlimited rights. The application of Hobbes’ ideas in the modern society is apt. Its application is important due to many reasons. First, the societies’ population grows rapidly, and there is a need to avail stronger societal norms that can hold people together. Laws are vital in ensuring that the large population of the world coexists in peace. Secondly, the world of today embraces capitalism, which leaves a larger part of the world population grieving in poverty. Without proper policies such as property rights, the poor population can trespass into the property of the rich people. In conclusion, Hobbes reiterates that people tend to sacrifice their natural liberties to the Leviathan because of the pre-existing conventions and property rights that they find in the society. It is important, to reinforce such legislation in the contemporary society to ensure the maintenance of sanity and order amongst the world’s populace.

CAPITAL BUDGETING Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

CAPITAL BUDGETING - Research Paper Example Moreover, it is a decision process that focuses on long-term investment for revenue and expenditure. My paper will be based on discussion of United State budgeting as a reference but the framework is applicable to the most part to any budgeting system whether national, state, or local, or whether it is in Europe or any other continent. Budgeting is done as a way of setting objectives and goals, for allocation of the resources essential to attain the objectives, for determining progress toward objectives, identifying inadequacies, and for controlling and integrating the diverse activities carried out by many sub-units within large bureaucracies both public and private (Rubin, 2004). Debt capacity refers to the ability of the government to make required debt service payments and to be able to pay back debt incurred without ruining its reputation either to other states or individuals. Therefore,this section will deal with the speculative issues affecting state debt management and accounts on a state debt financing policies and debt limits. State debt management processes and practices are important factors in the preparation of capital budgeting in order to ensure that the government is able to equalize the level of debt and/or debt services relative to current revenue that an providing entity can support and undue budgetary constraints that can affect the ability of the government to repay the debt on time does not arise. Therefore, when coming up with a capital budget, current expenditures are financed by current revenues while capital expenditures can be financed by borrowed funds. Debt financing is refunded by the cost of using public investments by the taxpa yers on the â€Å"benefit received† principle. The government uses a portion of taxes paid by the taxpayers as a way to ensure future taxpayers bear their â€Å"fair share† as a way to pay the debt incurred to provide public facilities. Secondly, debt capacity is determined

The Role of Knowledge Management and Human Resource Management in Research Paper

The Role of Knowledge Management and Human Resource Management in assisting the employees' replacement process - Research Paper Example Conclusions 22 References Appendices List of Abbreviations HRM: Human Resource Management KM: Knowledge Management IC: Intellectual Capital RBV: Resource-based-view 1. Introduction: Ulrich (1998) asserted that knowledge management through intellectual capital will be the basis for direct and indirect competitive advantage for organisations; and that successful organisations will be the ones that are most adept at attracting, developing and retaining individuals who can drive global organisation that is responsive for both its customers and the burgeoning opportunities of technology. Ulrich’s perspective on knowledge management and human resources management provide a strong foundation to understand contemporary organisations’ providence in sustaining their position in the global market. This paper will discuss the Ulrich perspective in depth and to show the link between the role of both Human Recourse Management and Knowledge Management in sustaining the competitive adv antage of organisations through knowledge workers. 2. What is Intellectual Capital: Ulrich (1998) emphasizes the ability to attract, develop and retain individuals that can run organisations at global levels while exploiting technological advancements for achieving and sustaining success. This is possible by building intellectual capital, which the Business Dictionary explains as the collective knowledge of individuals in an organisation or society, which can be used to produce wealth, multiple output of physical assets, gain competitive advantage, and/or to enhance value of other types of capital including customer capital, human capital, intellectual property, and structural capital (Skiba & Dulong, 2010; p.264). Human capital constitutes the knowledge gained by employees through specific activities that result in learning and innovation (Edvinsson and Malone 1997). Overall, Nahapiet and Ghoshal (1998; p.245) regard IC as â€Å"a valuable resource and a capability for action base d in knowledge.† Moreover, they regard IC of greater value compared to other organisational assets. According to them, IC operates in two dimensions, first based on types of knowledge; secondly, levels of analysis in knowledge and knowing. From the types of knowledge perspective, its classification into tacit and explicit knowledge by Polanyi (1967) stands good in organisational contexts. Intellectual capital is the hidden value of the organisation, and closely linked to Knowledge core processes such as acquisition, codification, dissemination, development and application (Davis, 2009). Establishment of this link between Knowledge core processes and IC requires an understanding of knowledge and its management in organisational contexts. 3. Knowledge and its management: Knowledge: Distinguishing from information and data, Lang (2001) identifies knowledge as a human creation that is embodied in mind, and argues that it cannot be delivered by systems or technology. A highly accep ted and notable classification of knowledge is that of Polanyi’s (1967) tacit and explicit knowledge. Tacit knowledge is that which is captured by an individual’s mindset and manifests through their actions. This knowledge can be acquired through interpersonal interaction (Lee & Choi, 2003). Explicit knowledge forms the formal and systematic knowledge which can be shared and communicated by codifying into manuals, procedures, rules etc (Nonaka & Konno, 1998; Stenmark, 2001). Explicit knowledge can be transferred to others in simpler manner than tacit
